Electrolux Dryer Making a Loud Squealing Noise in Fort Mill, SC

A noisy Electrolux dryer is what motivated our next call. The owner in Fort Mill, SC 29715 was concerned about the high-pitched squeal that the dryer made on startup. This noise was followed by a scraping noise as the machine ran. The drum turned, but the sound was loud enough for the homeowner to call Prime Appliance Repair.

During the service call, we focused on the noise. On opening the dryer, we found a cracked blower wheel and an idler pulley that was hard to turn.

A Cracked Blower Wheel

The blower wheel had a crack around its center mounting. Rather than staying securely attached as it should, it moved freely on the motor shaft.

The service technician removed and replaced the damaged wheel. The side-by-side photograph shows the old blower wheel beside the replacement.

A Stiff Idler Pulley

We also checked the belt's idler pulley during the inspection. The wheel was noticeably stiff and did not rotate freely as it should.

We replaced the pulley while the dryer was disassembled. We couldn’t predict when the pulley might fail, but its condition warranted replacement.

Checking the Dryer After the Repair

After replacing the blower wheel and idler pulley, we reassembled the dryer and ran it for about 10 minutes. First, we tested it empty, then with laundry in the drum.

The loud startup squeal and scraping noise had disappeared. The dryer ran normally during both checks. The homeowner was satisfied that we had fixed the problem. We had completed the repair in one visit.
