A homeowner in Charlotte contacted Prime Appliance Repair about water leaking from the front of their Whirlpool washing machine. We inspected the door opening and found a small hole in the rubber door boot (also known as the door gasket or seal). Water was escaping through this opening, despite its small size.

Finding The Hole in the Door Boot

As the customer had reported the leak coming from the front of the machine, that’s where we started our inspection. We opened the washer door and examined the flexible rubber seal, or door boot, around the drum entrance. After checking it carefully for some time, we found a small hole that was allowing water to escape.

While the location of the leak at the front of the washer gave us a clue to the possible source, there could have been other causes. In this case, finding the hole in the door boot made it clear that this was the source of the leak, and that a replacement seal was needed to complete the repair.

Replacing the Seal and Testing for Leaks

We completed the inspection, door boot replacement, and operating checks over two visits on the same day.

After installing the new door gasket, it was important to ensure the washer was in good working order. We allowed the washer to fill and tested it thoroughly. The washer washed, drained and spun as it should, and no water leaked during any part of the cycle.

What to Tell Us About a Leaking Washer

When arranging service for a washer that’s leaking, it’s helpful if you can give us additional details about the leak, such as:

where you first see water

whether water appears while the washer fills, washes, drains, or spins

if you can see any damage around the door opening.

This information tells us where to start when inspecting the machine.

If water is leaking, stop using the washer and arrange service. Even a small opening in the door boot can still allow water to escape, just as it did on this Whirlpool washer.
