Whirlpool Microwave Started Heating When the Door Closed: Repair in Indian Land, SC
Content of the Article
Closing the door was enough to start this Whirlpool microwave. The turntable rotated and the unit heated, even though nobody had pressed Start. Instead of calling Ghostbusters, the homeowner in Indian Land, SC 29707 sensibly called Prime Appliance Repair, and we made our first visit the following day.
Heating without a Start command
The microwave was a Whirlpool WMC50522AS1, installed in the kitchen island with a stainless-steel trim frame. We replaced all three door switches first, but the problem remained. Replacing the main control board resolved it.
The homeowner reported that the microwave was both rotating the turntable and heating. If we are told that a microwave appears to start on its own, we need to know if it is just a light or fan turning on, or if heating and rotating are happening too. In this case, closing the door made the appliance operate as though a cooking cycle had been started.
Troubleshooting a Microwave that Starts When the Door Closes
For this repair, our first suspects were the door switches. Door switches work with the latch mechanism as part of the microwave's operating and safety system. We took the microwave out of its cabinet opening and onto the countertop.

With the outer cover removed, we could reach the door-switch assembly beside the cooking cavity.

We replaced all three door switches and checked the microwave’s operation again, but the microwave still started when we closed the door.

That indicated that the issue wasn’t with the door itself, but with the component that tells the microwave how and when to operate: the main control board.

With the replacement board installed, we tested the microwave again by opening and closing the door. This time, the microwave stayed idle when the door closed. Naturally, we needed to check if it would work normally when required to, as well. It began operating only after Start was pressed, just as it should.

The repair was completed over two visits, and the microwave was reinstalled in the kitchen island with the trim frame in place. The homeowner was reassured that their microwave would now only start when they told it to!
