A Charlotte homeowner called Prime Appliance Repair after water began leaking inside her Samsung refrigerator immediately after replacing a filter. There had been no leak before the change. Water continued escaping from the filter area, so she shut off the main water supply to the house.

The refrigerator was a Samsung RFG237AARS/XAA. During inspection, we found a rubber seal from the generic filter lodged inside the filter head, preventing the internal valve from closing. We replaced the filter housing assembly and installed an original Samsung filter, completing the repair in two visits on the same day.

Finding The Source of the Refrigerator Leak

Our first job on arrival was to restore the house water supply and confirm the leak. We then moved the refrigerator out and closed its dedicated water shutoff valve behind the appliance, ensuring no more water could escape before we left to obtain the replacement part.

We traced the leak to the filter head, where we found a rubber seal from the filter had become stuck inside the housing, keeping the valve open. This open valve was causing the continuous flow of water into the refrigerator.

Replacing The Filter Housing Assembly

The filter cartridge connects to the filter head. For this repair, we returned on the same day with a replacement assembly, installed it, and fitted the original Samsung filter. The generic filter was not reused.

We ran one gallon of water through the dispenser, then checked the filter housing and connections for leaks. The area remained dry during dispensing and after the dispenser stopped and the water dispensing function was working normally.

What to Mention When Arranging Appliance Service

For an active leak, shut off the refrigerator’s water supply if you can safely access its valve, then arrange service.

If your Samsung refrigerator starts leaking after a filter change, tell us when the leak began and whether it continues while the dispenser is idle. Keep the filter packaging or part number available, along with a photo of the refrigerator's model label. Those details help us identify the cartridge and housing before selecting replacement parts.

While this repair involved a displaced seal inside the housing, this doesn’t mean that every leak after a filter change requires a new housing part. We always check carefully for the source of the fault before suggesting or fitting a replacement component.
