A Charlotte homeowner contacted Prime Appliance Repair because their Samsung refrigerator had stopped making ice.

Here is how we diagnosed and fixed this ice-making issue on their Samsung RF28R6301SR/AA appliance, over two visits: one for diagnosis of the problem, and the other for repair and final testing.

Diagnosis: Inspecting the Samsung’s Frozen Ice Maker

Our first visit was for diagnosis. When we removed the ice maker to inspect the assembly and the surrounding ice compartment, we instantly noticed that the ice maker itself was frozen. You can clearly see the frost on the removed unit in the photograph.

Frost around an ice maker shows where ice has collected, but this doesn’t tell us which component has failed. To determine that, we had to test the ice-maker’s operation.

Using service mode, we checked the ice maker's heating operation. The ice maker didn’t warm during that test. Our inspection and the failed heating test told us that we needed to replace the assembly.

Repair: Replacing the Ice Maker Assembly

We returned on a different day with the new ice maker assembly. This second visit was to complete the repair and ensure the ice maker was functioning correctly. We did not replace the heater separately; we installed a complete new assembly.

While replacing the whole ice maker assembly was the correct action in this case, another Samsung refrigerator producing no ice may need a different repair. That symptom alone doesn’t tell us which part needs replacement, or even if a new part is needed at all. It’s important for us to investigate all the potential causes and relevant components.

Testing Operation and Confirming Ice Production

After installation, we verified that the replacement assembly heated during testing. We also checked its operating cycle and watched it fill automatically with water. Later, the customer got in touch to confirm that their refrigerator was producing ice again. Problem solved.

What to Tell Us When Booking Your Samsung Ice Maker Repair

When you call, it’s useful to tell us whether the ice bin is empty, whether you can see frost around the ice maker, and whether the water dispenser still works. A photo of the refrigerator's model label helps us identify the appliance and check replacement components (this isn’t the same as the part number printed on the ice maker).
