KitchenAid Refrigerator Not Making Ice: Replacing the Ice Maker
Content of the Article
A customer arranged a service visit for their KitchenAid refrigerator, reporting that it had stopped making ice completely. Their appliance was a KitchenAid KRFC300ESS07, a French-door model with a bottom freezer. Its ice maker sits inside the freezer compartment.
During our inspection, we noticed the ice maker made a clicking sound and wasn’t activating the water fill. We checked the water inlet valve and the ice maker, then replaced the ice maker assembly.
Checking The Valve and the Ice Maker

The ice maker and inlet valve work together during the fill process. The ice maker initiates fill, and the valve allows water to enter the unit. When water is not arriving, we need to check both components to discover the culprit.

We measured approximately 2,000 ohms of resistance at the water inlet valve coil. We also checked the ice maker itself, which was clicking and failing to initiate the fill. We replaced the ice maker assembly and left the existing inlet valve in place.

Testing The Replacement Ice Maker Assembly
After installation of the new ice maker assembly, we checked its operating cycle. It automatically took in water through the existing valve, just as it should. This reassured us that the no-fill fault had been resolved and allowed us to watch the valve supplying water with the new ice maker installed.
What To Tell Us When Your KitchenAid Stops Making Ice
When arranging service for a faulty ice maker, describe whether:
- ice production has stopped completely or whether the bin is just filling more slowly
- there are any clicks or other new noises
- if the water dispenser is still dispensing water (if your refrigerator has one)
- any other changes you have noticed, such as issues with cooling
It also helps to know when the problem began and whether it happens constantly or comes and goes.

Provide the full model number if possible, or a photograph of the label. All this information can be helpful in assisting us to diagnose the issue, focus our inspection, and check the appropriate replacement components. Similar-looking KitchenAid refrigerators can use different parts, so the complete model number is important.
