GE refrigerator not cooling in Charlotte: replacing a failed defrost heater
In this repair
A Charlotte homeowner called Prime Appliance Repair because of a problem with their GE side-by-side refrigerator. Although the freezer was still cold, the fresh food compartment wasn’t cool. During our visit, we found heavy ice buildup around the evaporator and traced the problem to a failed defrost heater. We replaced the heater, tested the defrost operation, and checked that cold air was reaching the refrigerator compartment again. The repair was completed in one visit.

Finding the ice behind the freezer panel
When we started to inspect the refrigerator, we could see ice near the bottom of the evaporator cover. After removing the rear panel inside the freezer, we saw that heavy frost had accumulated around the coils.
The evaporator needs airflow around it to help cool the refrigerator. As frost builds up, it can obstruct that airflow. This can be confusing for homeowners: their freezer section may still be very cold, and functioning correctly, while the refrigerator compartment is warm. After noticing that ice buildup, we knew we needed to check the defrost system.
Testing the defrost heater
The defrost heater removes frost from the evaporator during the defrost operation. With the heater no longer working, ice had accumulated around the coils.
We checked the heater for resistance. The meter displayed OL, indicating an open circuit, and the heater failed the continuity check. That told us we needed to replace the heating element.

We used steam to clear the ice, quickly resolving the first problem.

We swapped out the failed heater for a replacement part to complete the repair.

Checking the repair and heater replacement
After installing the replacement heater, we activated forced defrost to confirm that the new heater was operating correctly. We also checked that cold air was reaching the fresh food compartment.
Clearing the ice had restored the airflow, but if we had stopped there, we wouldn’t have discovered the failed heater. It’s important to check all the components and processes that can lead to the fault, rather than just fix the first problem we find. Sometimes more than one component failure can contribute to a fault. Replacing the heater addressed the core cause of the fault we found, and the forced-defrost test verified that the replacement was working.
GE refrigerator repair in Charlotte
If your freezer is cold but the refrigerator compartment is warm, look for any frost buildup before you call, and tell us where it is when you call. It’s useful for us to know when the cooling function started to fail, too. Those details help us understand the symptoms before we visit. If you have the model number or can send a photograph of the appliance label, that makes it easier for us identify the appliance and compatible replacement parts.
