The microwave still worked, but the oven below it didn’t heat. Neither Bake nor Broil worked on this built-in GE combination unit in a home in Charlotte, NC 28270.

Our job was to find why the bottom oven wasn’t heating. The working microwave helped to eliminate some of the possible causes, but it didn’t tell us whether there was power to the oven heating circuits.

Tracing the Fault to the Control Board

Our problem-solving started at the power supply on the board. We checked both the 240- and 120-volt supplies. Then, we checked the main relay to find out whether power was reaching it and passing through.

We confirmed that there was power at the relay's input, but it wasn’t reaching the output. This finding pointed us to the relay circuit. After disassembling the oven, we found that the relay had a burnt leg.

The failed board was preventing the oven from heating in both modes. This symptom alone was not enough to identify the fault. The electrical checks and inspection had established the diagnosis.

Same-day Board Replacement

The service technician decided to replace the complete board rather than repairing the relay. The technician needed to return to the workshop to collect the replacement board, but we managed both visits and finished the repair on the same day.

Testing Bake at 350°F and Broil at 550°F

The technician tested the oven on Bake and Broil after fitting the new board. Bake ran at 350°F and Broil at 550°F. We used an independent thermometer rather than relying only on the control-panel display.

Both modes heated properly, and the thermometer readings confirmed the temperatures during testing. The repair restored both oven functions.
